Yiwu is one of the most useful places in China for small commodity sourcing. Importers go there for gifts, stationery, keychains, hair accessories, small household goods, phone accessories, simple electronics, bags, packaging items and seasonal products.

The market looks easy from the outside: find a booth, ask the price, place the order. In real purchasing work, the hard part starts after the first sample looks acceptable. You still need to confirm the supplier, write the specification, control packing, collect goods from different suppliers and inspect before shipment.

This guide is written for importers who want a practical Yiwu sourcing process, not just a cheaper unit price.

1. Start with a clear product list

Before searching in Yiwu, prepare a product list with pictures, target size, material, color, packaging, logo position, target quantity and destination market. For small commodities, tiny details change the final price. A keychain with a thicker ring, a phone holder with better adhesive, or a gift box with stronger paper can change the quote.

• Separate stock items from custom items.
• Mark which products need logo printing or private packaging.
• Write the expected order quantity for each SKU.
• List safety, labeling or packaging rules for your market.
• Set a target ship date before suppliers quote.

2. Understand booth, supplier and factory roles

A Yiwu booth is not always the factory. Some booths are owned by manufacturers. Some are trading companies. Some represent several factories and handle export orders through another company. This is normal in Yiwu, but you should know who will make the goods and who will take responsibility if something goes wrong.

Ask for the company name, business license name, export experience, production location and payment account. If the payment account does not match the company that quoted the order, slow down and check it.

3. Compare more than the unit price

Yiwu makes price comparison fast, but the lowest price is often missing something. The material may be thinner. The color may be less stable. The packaging may be weaker. Carton quantity may be different. For importers, the useful comparison is price plus specification.

• Product material and size
• Color and surface finish
• Packaging type and carton quantity
• MOQ for each color or design
• Sample lead time and bulk lead time
• Defect allowance and inspection standard

When two suppliers quote different prices, ask both to confirm the same specification in writing. Otherwise you are not comparing the same product.

4. Confirm stock order or custom order

Yiwu is strong for stock small commodities. Stock items usually have faster delivery and lower MOQ. They are suitable for product testing, mixed container orders and seasonal programs with short timelines.

Custom orders need tighter control. Logo printing, new packaging, custom color, barcode labels, instruction sheets and display boxes all add risk. Before paying a deposit, confirm artwork files, printing method, color reference, packing details and approval sample.

5. Use samples as a control tool

A sample is not just for checking whether the product looks nice. It should become the reference for bulk production. Keep photos, videos, measurements and packaging notes. If the order includes several colors or styles, mark each approved sample clearly.

For simple goods, a pre-production sample may be enough. For custom packaging or logo work, ask for a printed sample before bulk production. This avoids arguments later about color, logo size, paper thickness or accessory placement.

6. Control payment and order documents

Small commodity orders often involve many suppliers and many small payments. That is where mistakes happen. Keep one order sheet for each supplier with item number, picture, unit price, quantity, packaging, delivery date, payment terms and warehouse address.

Do not pay the balance only because a supplier says the goods are ready. The better sequence is simple: confirm goods are finished, inspect or at least check cartons and samples, then release the balance.

7. Inspect before consolidation and shipment

Low-cost goods still need inspection. The most common Yiwu problems are mixed colors, missing accessories, weak packing, poor printing, dirty surfaces, wrong barcode labels, damaged cartons and quantity shortage.

A practical inspection should check SKU, quantity, color split, packaging, carton marks, basic function, visible defects and whether the supplier delivered the right goods to the warehouse. This is especially important when one shipment includes goods from ten or twenty suppliers.

8. Plan consolidation early

Yiwu sourcing often means multi-supplier orders. The freight forwarder may receive cartons from different booths on different days. Without consolidation control, carton marks get mixed, product lists are incomplete, and the final shipment becomes hard to check.

A local warehouse or sourcing partner should receive the goods, count cartons, match them to the order sheet, separate SKUs, keep photos and prepare the shipping documents. That work is not glamorous, but it prevents expensive confusion at the destination.
